Thanks for this—very enlightening. I was almost 4 in April 1950–I’m the same age as Dolly—and I remember hearing “Chattanooga Shoeshine Boy” at some point. It was everywhere for awhile. Of course, I had no idea how racist it was as a child in the racist South. I grew up in Commerce, Texas (60 miles north of Dallas, Natalie) and East Texas was very much part of the South. I wish those racist ways were all gone, but unfortunately we have people like Morgan Wallen to show us that racism lives on!
